Our Latin Thing
The Street Concert
Part of the Our Latin Thing movie was a scene shot in front of a church, on its steps. There Larry Harlow and Pacheco decided to do an outdoor street concert for the movie.
Larry’s band played great as usual. Pacheco was going to play a flute solo with Larry’s band backing him up. Not many from the studio wanted to work that day, so I was alone in the truck.
If you look at the film you will see Larry Harlow wearing a colored tee shirt. In Hebrew letters it says “Kosher” in English letters it says “Meat”. Larry’s nick name is “Judayo Marveloso” or the “Marvelous Jew”.
Pacheco started late. Someone had grabbed the wrong parts for different flutes and they didn’t fit together.
Eventually the right parts came and Pacheco played.
What Pacheco played was so moving, I recorded and cried in the truck.
What a jerk I was, recording, with tears streaming down my face.
Listen, it’s in the movie.
At the end of this scene, Pacheco also appears to be wiping a tear from his face.
